The Great Resignation, or Was it?

In 2021 it was difficult to escape stories of the Great Resignation and the accompanying statistics. People revaluated their lives, how much time they spent at work and even what they did. Some, if in the position to do so, retired earlier than they had previously considered.

2021 did see people completely change careers and reconsider their work location. Others adjusted their working patterns or requested flexible working, and many have found they enjoyed hybrid working and if this was not offered by their business found a new role in a business that does offer the hybrid environment.

Confidently businesses thought that after a turbulent 18 months and general adjustment there would be a re-settling of everyone’s routines and although things might be done differently, we could expect to establish our new way of working.  However, a year on, if we asked you, I am sure we all know someone who is challenging their workplace on how, when and where they work.

According to a BBC survey almost 1 in 5 workers say they are likely to change jobs in the next 12 months. Probably more important is that it is the younger, highly skilled workers that were likely to be unhappy or are seeking a pay rise. 60% of these also saying they would prefer to work fully or mostly at home.

These are the groups that we thought would want to be in the office to meet other people and embed themselves in the office culture, but it seems we are mistaken!

We could seriously question not only when but if this is going to settle down or is this continued turbulence what the job market will look like going forward?

There are more job vacancies than unemployed people, the number of people moving job-to-job has hit record high and millennials particularly are voting with their feet!

PWC admit that temporary solutions to business problems have become employee preference and expectations.
