Leading International Teams
As organisations continue to globalise through growth, merger and acquisition, the challenges of managing international virtual teams grows. The barriers to success include language, cultural differences, procedural differences and the lack of face to face interaction. Failure to derive optimum performance from an international team is more often than not down to interpersonal challenges rather than technical capability.
Good leaders of international teams are excited by what they do. They are intrigued by different cultures, they enjoy dealing with people, they are good organiser's and results driven. They value people from all cultures and they work hard to connect and communicate. They know where they are going and how they will get there. They understand how to use technology to support their need to communicate effectively
Our work with international leaders from successful global businesses has helped us to identify the key competences of effective international team leaders. We use these eight competences as the basis for developing the capability of leaders.
This product area is led by Warren Wright. Warren brings a deep level of expertise from his work and consulting career. He has worked with many leading organisations particularly in the pharmaceutical, telecoms and banking industries. Warren has worked in all corners of the globe. He manages to connect with all the different nationalities from the many countries he has worked in over the years. Much of our approach has been developed with practical experience in the field and research with leading thinkers on the subject.
Our approach helps:
- Develop the skills and mind set for successfully leading international teams for optimum results
- Understanding of cultural differences and how to adapt behaviour to ensure alignment and connection
- Identify and use the tools and processes for leading international teams effectively
- Align an organisational culture over a global or pan-european platform
- International Leadership Competences – the skills for effectiveness based on what today's most successful international team leaders do
- Cultural Matrix – identifying key differences and how to adapt behaviour to connect cross culturally
- Tools – identifying the tools required to lead international teams to ensure effective communication and project leadership
- The alignment of a consistent leadership climate through the embedding of organisational values and behaviours
Offshore Investment Banking
Critical to the success of this high profile acquisition due to the recent economic downturn, it was paramount that this training intervention aligned this new international team and integrated the strengths from both organisations to maximise market penetration and increase market share.
This particular intervention utilised our blended capability to offer rapid e-learning and web based virtual classroom sessions to support the embedding and transfer of key leadership behaviours. The outcome of this was in market leading integration of both organisations to form this new organisation and support developing a very powerful brand across the market.
Pharmaceutical
After the integration of two top ten organisations we were involved in aligning the organisational differences and behavioural competencies for these major organisations to develop one consistent multi-disciplined international team. This project demanded a series of three different workshops with ongoing support via video conferencing interventions. The outcome was that the development of four blockbuster drugs were delivered within the project timeline in spite of massive organisational integrational change.
Aeronautical
This global support organisation to the aeronautical industry needed to develop international consistency of approach and behaviours in their leadership teams. Working closely with their learning and development function, firstly as consultants to and then as deliverers of, eight separate workshops which developed into the suite of an international leadership development programme. The solution involved a mixture of face to face, telephone and virtual classroom interventions which enabled delegates to walk away with an internationally accredited certificate in leadership.
